Santerre, Antoine-Joseph
(1752-1809)
   political figure
   Born in Paris, where he was a brewer in the faubourg Saint-Antoine (and where he was called "le Père du faubourg" because of his generosity), Antoine-Joseph Santerre, during the revolution of 1789, took part in all the major revolutionary events and was one of the leaders of those that occurred on June 20, 1792. He was put in charge of guarding the Temple, where the royal family was imprisoned, and he led King louis XVI to the scaffold. A division commander in the vendée in 1793, he was defeated at Coron. A suspect, Santerre was imprisoned in the Carmes, but was freed after 9 Thermidor, Year II (July 27, 1794).
